Inside the archive/Casa Serra · Sintra

A house arranged around one shaded court.

Every room opens to the same quiet court, so daylight, breeze and the sound of water reach the whole house through the day.

The method & discipline

We begin with what is already there.

Light, landform and the long memory of a place lead the work. We draw slowly with the people who will live in our buildings, so every room feels considered, useful and quietly its own.

Approach

Four quiet stages, one conversation.

Every project moves through the same four stages. The line follows you down the page; each stage lights up as you pass it.

Stage 01

Listen

We walk the site at different hours, study the light and the old walls, and listen to how you want to live.

White walls meeting in soft light
Stage 02

Draw

Sketches by hand first, then study models in plaster and card, until the plan feels inevitable.

Stage 03

Build

We stay on site with local masons and joiners, choosing every stone, lime and timber finish in person.

Stage 04

Live in it

A year after moving in we return, adjust what daily life has taught us, and leave the house to age well.

Client voice

“They never once asked what style we wanted. They asked where the light falls at breakfast — and built the house around that.”
